Bhang : The ancient cannabis tea from India

Near the banks of river Ganges the spirituality of ancient Hindu culture flood in the daily life of people, as the stream of water flow since thousands of years ago. The culture of India is linked to spiritualism, a connection between nature and mankind. And also cannabis is an important part of one of the most classic beverage in the Indian subcontinent.

We are talking about Bhang, an edible preparation of cannabis, made with pestle and mortar, with the additionn of spices, milk, and ghee, a type of clarified butter very common in South Asia traditional medicine and religiouss rituals. The first reference about the use of Bhang is located on the Vedas, the ancient mythical scriptures of Hinduism.

People from rural areas in India use this mixture of milk, species and cannabis for many purposes like cure dysentery, fever, sunstroke, and relief digestion problems, and can cure speech imperfections. Also, is used in different kind of preparations for strengthen “spiritual states of awakening”.

After this short definition about Bhang tea maybe you are thinking “Well, seems cool and very interesting, but that’s not a real tea guys”. We must admit that you are absolutely right. Bhang Is not a “tea” as we commonly know.

Is a traditional beverage made of cannabis, that the people of India uses almost daily for medical and religious purposes, but that doesn’t mean that this cannabis tea would not be tasty, fresh, and different.

That’s the main reason why we decided to show you today our recipe for a cool Bhang tea.

There are as many variations as kinds of cannabis seeds, but the most common recipe (and the easiest) is the one that you can find bellow.
Ingredients that you’ll need:

  • 1 or 2 grams of your favourite weed
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg, clove or cinnamon
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 3 grams of butter

How to prepare the cannabis tea:

Use a pan to melt the butter, add the cannabis and simmer it during two minutes. Then add the milk. After warming the mixture, you can add any additional spices you’d like.

And finally it’s done!.

You can drink it cold or warm. If you add natural honey, then can have a sweet and different variation.

Keep in mind that if you are vegan, or just don’t like milk, you can use substitutes like oat milk, nutmilk, or almond milk. Vegan butter is also a good alternative, since most of them are made using sunflower lecithin granules.
